Lessons from the World's Leading Camshaft Manufacturers

Over the past several years, I've had the opportunity to visit many of the world's leading camshaft manufacturers. I've walked their production floors, met with their teams, and seen firsthand the level of precision and productivity required to manufacture camshafts on a global scale.

Every manufacturing facility has its own way of doing things. The machines may be different, the production lines may be laid out differently, and each company has developed its own methods over years of experience. While I'll always respect the confidentiality of those processes, one thing became very clear as I visited these facilities: regardless of how they manufacture a camshaft, they're all striving to achieve the same result.

Recently, while scrolling through LinkedIn, I came across a 2025 Automotive Camshaft Market Share Analysis published by Pristine Market Insights. As I looked through the companies identified in the study, I immediately recognized many of the names. I've had the opportunity to personally visit many of them during my time at Arobotech. Looking more closely, I realized that seven of the top eight were companies I work with regularly, and many have relied on Arobotech products for years.

That got me thinking.

A Common Need for Precision

There is no shortage of discussion about how manufacturing has changed over the last 40 years, and how this evolution keeps happening. New powertrain technologies, changing vehicle platforms, and evolving production volumes continue to reshape the automotive industry.

But regardless of how the industry evolves, the demands placed on camshaft manufacturing remain high. Production teams are focused on maintaining precision, improving consistency, controlling cycle time, and producing a quality component as efficiently as possible.

Those are challenges Arobotech has been helping manufacturers address for decades.

Ultimately, regardless of the equipment or process, these manufacturers are working toward the same objective:

Make a better part. Make it consistently. And make it efficiently.

For Arobotech, helping camshaft manufacturers achieve those goals isn't something new. Our history in camshaft grinding goes back to the 1980s, when one of the first Arobotech AUTO REST® units was installed on a camshaft grinding machine at a General Motors plant in Flint, Michigan.

From that first application to the global manufacturing facilities I've visited over the years, the fundamental need has remained unchanged. Successful grinding operations require reliable workpiece support that delivers stability, precision, and repeatability throughout the grinding process.

Technology has evolved considerably since those early installations, but its purpose remains at the heart of the Arobotech Grinding AUTO REST®.

Precision Where It Matters

The real questions aren't necessarily about the features of a steady rest. They're about the part and the process.

How do you know the workpiece is on the correct centerline every time the grinding wheel makes contact? How do you properly support it at the point of grind? How do you maintain that support as the diameter changes? And just as importantly, how do you do all of that while reducing the time it takes to produce each part?

Proper workpiece support allows the grinding process to be more aggressive while maintaining the stability and accuracy required of the finished part. That can translate directly into reduced cycle time, which over thousands or even millions of parts can have a significant impact on productivity.

But there is another part of this that can be easy to overlook.

The people running these machines don't want to spend their day thinking about the steady rest. They don't want to continually adjust it, troubleshoot it, or wonder whether it's doing what it's supposed to do. They want to set up the process, make good parts, and keep production moving.

That's where reliability becomes just as important as precision. A steady rest should do its job consistently, cycle after cycle, without becoming something the operator has to manage. The less attention it demands, the more attention the operator can devote to producing quality parts.

That combination of precision, productivity, and reliability has always been at the heart of the Grinding AUTO REST®.

An Installed Base Is Also an Opportunity

Arobotech products have been installed on grinding machines around the world for decades. Some arrived with new equipment. Others have been incorporated into existing processes or updated as manufacturing requirements changed.

That history matters, but it shouldn't make us complacent.

Manufacturing processes continue to evolve. Machines are replaced. New programs launch. Existing equipment is retooled. Requirements become more demanding.

Each of those changes creates another opportunity to ask whether the workpiece support technology being used today is still the best solution for tomorrow.

Already There and Still Moving Forward

There's something rewarding about walking into a customer's manufacturing facility and seeing an Arobotech AUTO REST® doing exactly what it was designed to do. And while my own customer visits have primarily been throughout the U.S. and Canada, we know that same Arobotech technology is supporting camshaft production around the world.

Seeing seven of the eight leading camshaft manufacturers identified in this market analysis using Arobotech products reinforces something we've believed for a long time: the quality of the finished part depends on the quality of the support behind it.

For manufacturers, the challenge is to keep finding ways to make a better part, reduce cycle time, and keep production moving without introducing unnecessary complexity into the process.

That's the challenge Arobotech has been working on since that first camshaft application in Flint more than four decades ago, and it's the same challenge we're focused on today.
